GARDEN ROUTE NEWS - Four learners from the Southern Cape brought home medals from the prestigious 2023 Eskom Expo International Science Fair (ISF) held at the Birchwood Hotel and OR Tambo Conference Centre in Boksburg from 3 to 6 October.
The event brought together the brightest young scientists from across South Africa and various countries around the world.
Mian Hurter (Grade 10 - Curro Mossel Bay), Jaco Jacobs (Grade 12 - Outeniqua High School), Abigail Marais (Grade 10 – Point High School) and Abrie van As (Grade 10 – Oakdale Agricultural School) are the medal winners from the Southern Cape.
Mian, Abigail and Abrie won silver medals and Jaco a gold. Mian and Jaco were the winners in their respective categories, while Jaco received a bursary of R30 000 from the Pretoria University as a special award.
A total of 54 gold, 92 silver and 105 bronze medals, along with 62 Highly Commended certificates were awarded at the ISF, while the coveted opportunity to represent South Africa at prominent international science fairs in (Taiwan, Tunisia, Indonesia, Bali, USA, Hong Kong, Zimbabwe, Kenya, Ireland, Turkey and India) was awarded to deserving learners.
