The 57-year-old suspect was arrested several days after the murder on the elderly Ron Wiggett.
The community of Great Brak River was shocked by the murder of Wiggett in September last year in his home on the island. The neighbourhood consists of less than 90 homes and is considered as an idyllic retirement location.
The victim was allegedly attacked and stabbed multiple times with a knife. Wiggett's wife discovered his body the morning after the murder.
The suspect was arrested by members of the Great Brak River police, but soon released thereafter because of a lack of evidence. He was, however, arrested again after blood that was found at the scene was positively linked with blood on the suspects’ pants.
Bail was previously denied to him, and he remains in custody for the duration of the trial. He will appear again in court on 12 May.
