GEORGE NEWS - Two people, a husband and wife, were killed and 3 passengers seriously injured in an accident on the R404 (between Blanco and the airport) at around 22:45 last night, Sunday 7 January.
This part of the road was closed until around 05:00 this morning.
According to Southern Cape police spokesperson, Captain Malcolm Pojie, various emergency personnel had to work around the clock to free the bodies from the wreckage that was stuck under the truck it collided with.
“The truck allegedly tried to make a U-turn after it had taken the wrong route. While the truck was turning, the SUV (an Audi Q5) with 5 occupants, apparently travelling back to Kimberley, collided head-on with the side of the truck. The couple was presumably killed on impact,” Pojie said.
The other three passengers, two elderly women and a child (7), were transported to a local hospital for medical treatment.
Police are investigating a case of culpable homicide. The autopsy will be performed in the coming week.
No arrests have been made and the investigation continues.
