GEORGE NEWS - The 13th Funda Mzantsi Championship kicked off at Eden Place in George earlier this morning, Monday 2 October.
This annual event is a collaboration between the Department of Correctional Services (DCS), National Library of South Africa (NLSA) and George Municipality.
For the past 12 years, Funda Mzantsi has been an exciting and educational experience for readers and spectators alike.
A total of 299 inmates representing all nine provinces will once again face off against book clubs from universities, public schools and the community.
Participants are assessed in four categories - impromptu reading, debating, spelling bee and book reviewing.
This initiative is aimed at enhancing the culture of reading and eradicating illiteracy in South Africa.
