GEORGE NEWS - A 33-year-old Thembalethu man is expected to make his first court appearance in the Thembalethu Magistrate's Court this morning, Monday 24 April, after an unlicensed firearm was found in his possession over the weekend.
On Saturday 22 April at about 20:30, Thembalethu police members were deployed in crime hotspot areas to curb incidents of serious and violent crimes.
According to Southern Cape police spokesperson Sgt Chris Spies, their members were conducting vehicle patrols at 21st Street, Zone 07 in Thembalethu when they spotted two suspicious men.
"They approached the men when one suddenly sped off with police members in pursuit," said Spies.
"His freedom was short-lived when police caught up with him. Upon searching the man the police found an unlicensed firearm in his possession. Police confiscated the handgun and arrested the man on a charge of possession of unlicensed firearm and ammunition."
Spies said that firearms in the hands of criminals pose a major threat to communities.
"Enhanced patrols in crime-ridden areas are in line to ensure that there are more boots on the ground to safeguard communities."
