In a remarkable testament to their breeding, some 25 terrier-type dogs, (mostly Jack Russells and Dachshunds, 3 Yorkies and a Staffie pup), showed off their genetic love of the chase at a new fun event organised in Wilderness before Christmas.
Reverend John 'Jack' Russell, the British parson and keen fox hunter who first bred Jack Russell terriers back in 1818, would have been proud! Some of the other dogs - a Labrador, some mixed breeds and a poodle – also had a go, but they lacked the 'terrier tenacity', preferring to have a roll in the hay or a run in any direction! But all the dogs had one thing in common – they thoroughly loved the day!
This unique fun morning was organised by Janine and Peter Kaye on the fields of the Anchor Park Equestrian Centre in Wilderness and they have indicated that it could become a regular event.
Having adopted 'Bonnie', (a Dachshunds pup that had run into a bed of burning coals, but healed wonderfully thanks to the love and care received at the SPCA), the Kayes set up the Terrier Fun Chase to raise funds for the Garden Route SPCA.
"Thanks to the 60 people who arrived and took raffle tickets or became SPCA members, we raised R1 000 for the SPCA!" said an enthusiastic Janine Kaye. "We'd also like to thank Warren Flockhart for building the lure, The York Street Vet Shop, Cloudbase Paragliding, Eden Adventures and Cocomos Restaurant who gave us prizes, and Sanitech who so kindly loaned us toilet facilities."

Just loving the fun - a Jack Russell in racing colours!
