Update
GEORGE NEWS - Colleges such as South Cape TVET College have grown into highly desired institutions for further learning.
So says Alewijn Dippenaar, chairperson of the college council, commenting on a prestigious award that the college has received for the first time.
At a gala dinner on Wednesday 27 July, the college received the Department of Higher Education and Training's Gold Award as best performing college for strategic partnerships on student placements.
Dippenaar told George Herald the award has many advantages for the college. It would help strengthen the relationship between the business community and the college and should encourage local businesses to take in more students for practical work.
He says the award stresses the good relationship between the college and the business sector in the Garden Route.
"Congratulations to all the staff who worked tirelessly to place our college students in the formal job sector."
Dippenaar says besides the great honour for the college, the award also says a lot about the quality of co-operation.
It is important to note that some of the courses entail practical work on site. The college has about 6 500 students on six campuses in the region - Mossel Bay, George, Plettenberg Bay, Oudtshoorn, Riversdale and Beaufort-West.
These colleges offer a variety of academic courses including office management, tourism and human resources.
More practical courses include plumbing and bricklaying. The Mossel Bay campus is a centre of excellence in bricklaying.
Most students hail from the Western, Northern and Eastern Cape.
