Update
GEORGE NEWS - The seal which appeared to be stranded at Victoria Bay this afternoon, returned to the sea.
This was according to the Stranded Marine Animal Rescue Team (S.M.A.R.T.).
A S.M.A.R.T. volunteer said she contacted a marine mammal expert, who said the seal might simply have been moulting.
It was a male elephant seal. This species of seal comes from Antarctica. The volunteer said people had harassed the seal and thrown buckets of water over it earlier.
She stressed that stranded animals should be left alone. People should keep their distance.
Should you see a stranded or injured marine animal, contact S.M.A.R.T. (072 227 4715). Do not try to help it yourself.
