GEORGE NEWS - Repair work of over R3m to a pipeline in Oewer Street and pipeline rehabilitation projects in Conville and Denneoord will make a difference to businesses in the industrial area as well as local residents.
Kat River gabions
A 500mm-diameter treated water line of the pipeline along the Kat River (Oewer Street) area was damaged and washed out in the November/December 2021 flood.
According to Jannie Koegelenberg, Director of Civil Engineering Services, the department had to repair the pipeline and secure it by installing gabions along the line.
This pipeline is critical in supplying potable water to the Industrial Area in George. Koegelenberg said the gabions will protect the pipeline within the riverbed against future flooding, possible erosion and exposure to failure.
The R355 000 project that was made possible by flood disaster funds given to George Municipality, was completed at the end of June.
Pipeline rehabilitation
In Conville, a dilapidated 300mm-diameter bulk water supply pipeline was replaced by a new 300mm-diameter HDPE pipeline, including new isolating and scour valves. Koegelenberg said some parts of the Conville, Parkdene and Industrial areas experienced low pressure and areas were without potable water during June.
The replacement of the 300mm diameter pipeline will improve network pressure and make water supply more reliable. The R2,3m project is close to completion.
In 5th Avenue, Denneoord, gabion structures have been installed to protect the 1 000mm-diameter western bypass potable water supply pipeline against failure in the event of future flooding.
The pipeline ensures sustainable supply of potable water to the western areas of George. The project was completed with R408 000 granted from Flood Disaster Funding.
