GEORGE NEWS - In light of the recent spate of gender-based violence incidents across the country in which a number of women and children were raped and murdered, the Nelson Mandela University (NMU) George Campus held a peaceful demonstration to show solidarity against the violence.
The demonstration, which took the form of a march by students, lectures and general university employees, was held at the campus on Tuesday 10 September.
The marchers also condemned the recent xenophobic attacks and looting of foreign shop owners which took place mainly in Gauteng and saw 12 people killed.
University communications manager Milisa Piko said the march demonstrates a meaningful show of solidarity against gender and sexual-based violence, femicide, xenophobia and all forms of violent crimes gripping the university, metro, province and country. "We, as a university collective across our differences, need to take a stand," said Piko.
