GEORGE NEWS - George Mayor Leon van Wyk appointed a new mayoral committee (mayco) on Wednesday 27 May. 

The mayco was expected to be announced during the electronic special council meeting yesterday, Thursday 28 May. 

However, the meeting was cut short shortly after the tabling of the draft multi-year budget, since Council was unable to reach a quorum.

The role of the mayco is to assist the mayor and to function as a local cabinet. It is in essence an extension of the office of the executive mayor. 

Each member of the mayco works on different areas of municipal government and is appointed a specific portfolio. 

The new mayco is as follows:

1. Deputy Mayor and Portfolio Councillor for Human Resources: Cllr Charlotte Clarke

2. Speaker: Cllr Gerrit Pretorius

3. Chief Whip: Cllr Marlene Barnardt

4. Portfolio Councillor for Finance and Strategic Services: Cllr Dirk Wessels

5. Portfolio Councillor for Civil Engineering Services: Cllr Jacqulique von Brandis

6. Portfolio Councillor for Electrotechnical Services: Cllr Nosicelo Mbete

7. Portfolio Councillor for Planning: Cllr Johan Stander

8. Portfolio Councillor for Human Settlements: Cllr Raybin Figland

9. Portfolio Councillor for Community Services: Cllr Sean Snyman

10. Portfolio Councillor for Protection Services: Cllr Cecil Noble

11. Portfolio Councillor for Corporate Services: Cllr Isaya Stemela
