GEORGE NEWS AND VIDEO - Mediclinic George and Geneva staff in cooperation with the Rise Against Hunger Foundation spent the whole morning today, Thursday 20 October, packing 13 000 meals for poor families in and around George.
"One of these meals feeds a family of six and we wanted to do our bit for the hungry in the George area. The meals are being distributed among 16 local welfare organisations," said Jana Boshoff, co-ordinator of the project for Mediclinic in George.

The hospital invited staff to volunteer and it turned out to be an enjoyable morning with the drive-through area at the front door transformed into a temporary production line where they worked in shifts from 08:30.
Each shift aimed to pack 3 240 meals per hour. They finished at about 13:30 with their target of 13 000 in the bag.
Theirs is part of a bigger effort of various Mediclinic hospitals in the country that aim to pack a total of 130 000 meals between 17 and 21 October. This coincides with World Hunger Day on 16 October.
Gugu Hlotshwayo, events facilitator at the Rise Against Hunger Foundation, said 13 000 meals will feed 50 children one meal per week for an entire year.
The meals contain a mixture of dry lentils, rice and soy.

"The meals are costed at R3,10 per meal and one meal feeds six to 10 children. A person can become a donor for only R62,90 per month. This amount will feed one child for a month. We invite the public to help us by making a donation," Hlotshwayo said.
