WILDERNESS NEWS - A man in his late 40s drowned in the Touw River lagoon in Wilderness yesterday afternoon, Sunday 1 April.
According to NSRI Wilderness duty controller, Mike Vonk, the man was having a picnic with friends when he went for a swim and got into difficulty.
“A friend had entered the water to try to help him but did not manage. He was however able to get out of the water unassisted without injuries. The victim disappeared under the water,” he said.
Six NSRI rescue swimmers immediately started searching for the man. They found him but unfortunately all efforts to resuscitate him failed and he was declared dead on the scene.
An inquest docket has been opened by the police.
“Our sincere condolences to the family and friends of the deceased,” said Vonk.
