GEORGE NEWS - The Western Province Blood Transfusion Service (WPBTS) and Wimpy franchises nationwide are taking hands to urge people to donate blood during the most challenging season to maintain a sufficient amount of blood stock. According to Arlecia November, WPBTS promotions officer, Wimpy in York Street, agreed to extend their partnership in the blood drive, which was initially from Tuesday 19 until Friday 22 June nationwide, they will continue until Wednesday 27 June.
“The blood stocks have reached a critically low level, especially the O and B groups. WPBTS has enough blood left for one day,” said November.
“Ideally, WPBTS aims to have a five-day supply of blood available at all times to meet the needs of hospital patients. This also includes having a safety net to be prepared for emergencies when large volumes of blood products could be needed.”
WPBTS appeals to everyone to donate at the following blood donation clinics in collaboration with Wimpy. Each donor will receive a free Wimpy wristband, which can be redeemed for a free warm cup of Wimpy coffee.
- Tuesday 19 – Friday 22 June from 10:00 until 19:00 at WPBTS, The Medical Centre, Courtenay Street, George.
- Monday 25 June from 12:00 until 16:00 at Checkers in York Street.
- Wednesday 27 June from 11:00 until 15:00 at George Municipality in York Street.
According to November, a big percentage of blood stock derives from blood donation clinics at schools. “Blood donations at high school and college blood drives account for as much as 20 percent of donations during the school year. During winter months as well as exams, these donors are not as accessible,” she said.
November explains that in a situation when blood products aren’t readily available, elective surgeries may need to be postponed. In a worst-case scenario, when a hospital doesn’t have enough blood supply, even serious procedures may need to be delayed.
Donor criteria
- Older than 16 years and younger than 65
