GEORGE NEWS - Nowadays, nobody even bats an eyelid to see people in space suits walking the streets with spraying equipment.
Yes, firefighters and volunteers dressed in protective gear are still continuing disinfection efforts ordered by the Garden Route District Municipality (GRDM) and various B-municipalities in informal settlements and public areas throughout the district.
During this initiative, special focus is being placed on public areas such as waiting rooms, meeting / committee rooms and police facilities.
Since Thursday 2 April various areas in George, such as Syferfontein, Borcherds, the Thembalethu taxi rank, certain zones in Thembalethu, certain areas in the George CBD, all the police stations, both George and Thembalethu courts and holding cells, as well as the George correctional services, have been disinfected by GRDM firefighters and volunteers. Uniondale, Haarlem and Noll were also tended to.

During the following week the GRDM team can be expected to be seen in areas like Pacaltsdorp, Touwsranten, Lawaaikamp, Blanco and Parkdene.
Although the Mossel Bay municipality received assistance from GRDM to disinfect certain areas recently, they, as well as other B-municipalities like Knysna, Hessequa, Bitou and Oudtshoorn, are continuing disinfecting efforts in their specific regions.

In a press release issued last week the GRDM commends community members and government departments for their cooperation throughout the process.
"For the past week, since the initiative commenced, all efforts have been received well," said Marillia Veldkornet, spokesperson for the GRDM. "This is an indication that residents are fully aware of the seriousness of the pandemic."
Knysna municipal workers disinfected the taxi rank last Thursday, 9 April.
