GEORGE NEWS - It's that time of the year when some take a well-deserved break, spend time with their families and loved ones, and reflect on another year.
This is also a period where traditionally, blood stocks are under pressure, so please remember: wherever you go, there's a blood donation clinic just around the corner.
Many South Africans will be travelling over the festive season and there has been an urgent call for blood donors, especially blood type AB.
Less than 1% of South Africans are active blood donors. A unit of blood only lasts 42 days after donation and, for this reason, it is important for blood donors to donate regularly. Donors can give blood as often as every eight weeks.
Every unit of blood can save a minimum of three lives as blood is separated into red blood cells, plasma and platelets.
Also be on the lookout for our #CoolestBloodDonorEver competition that will take place at fixed blood donation centres.
When you donate during this period, you get to enjoy an extra treat - there is nothing like a cold ice-cream on a hot summer's day! But the extra fun and yummy treats aside, you will rest assured that you gave the biggest gift this festive season - saving lives.
Apart from the mobile donation centres in George, blood can be donated at the medical centre in Courtenay Street on Wednesdays from 10:00 to 19:00 and Fridays from 10:00 to 15:00.
Donation usually takes 30 minutes.
Please remember to eat a balanced meal three to four hours before you donate blood. Increase your fluid intake before and after donation. If you need more information, please contact us on 021 507 6300 or info@wcbs.org.za.
