GEORGE NEWS - When our December holiday visitors arrive they are often looking for a unique form of entertainment that doesn't cost too much. With prices spiralling, it is hard to find real holiday bargains any more. But, in George there is a wonderful art gallery attached to the George Museum that currently houses a bumper exhibition of artworks by regional artists.
It is a beautifully cool building, relaxed and quiet, and big enough to display plenty of exciting art. The theme this season is "Days of Light and Colour" which, if taken at face value, will lift the spirits and enliven the mind. What more can a holidaymaker want?
The exhibition is organised by the South Cape Association for Visual Arts (Scava) and is open to all members of the region, who may show as many paintings as they desire for an exhibition fee of R10 per painting.
Something for everyone
The theme at this time of year is always about the environs, so artists can submit their favourite subjects. There will be a whole mix of genres, many landscapes, still life, portraiture, miniatures, and some expressionism pieces. Thus the whole show is very colourful, offering favourite subject matter for all viewers.
Scava, one of 34 branches of Sanava (South African National Association for Visual Arts), draws in artists from surrounding areas, as far as 250 kilometres away. This year, art from De Rust and Hermanus is included. Mossel Bay, Great Brak and Wilderness artists are also present, as is a large contingent of George artists.
If you are an art lover, this is your opportunity to commune with artists, enjoy works of art and perhaps choose one for your home. For art collectors, there are a few gems from yet undiscovered geniuses. Come and see them.
Normal viewing days at the George Museum Art Gallery are Mondays to Fridays from 09:00 till 16:30, and Saturdays from 09:00 till 12:00. Bring your children or friends - it is a marvellous way to entertain them. There is no entrance fee.
Scava artists may still be included in the exhibition. Phone Maura St.John on 083 475 4177. More information about Scava is available at www.scava.co.za.
