GEORGE NEWS - A total of 57 traffic lights in George now boast uninterrupted power supply (UPS) units to keep traffic flowing seamlessly during Eskom load shedding.
Mayor Leon van Wyk was recently accompanied by Portfolio Councillor for Electrotechnical Services Nosicelo Mbete, Director of Electrotechnical Services Bongani Mandla and the Electrotechnical Services team during a visit to UPS installations to mark the completion of the second phase of the UPS installation programme.
The first phase, which comprised installations of UPS units in the 40 major road intersections with traffic lights, was completed in the previous financial year (2021/2022), ending in June.
The second phase included the covering of 17 more intersections and was completed at the end of August.
These units, which are eco-friendly and energy-saving, automatically kick in and operate the traffic lights should the electricity supply be interrupted. They have an average duration of four hours before the batteries need recharging.
This means that traffic intersections in George are free from load-shedding and unplanned power outages for the duration of the batteries' charge.
The remaining intersections will receive UPS units once the current road construction works have been completed.
