GEORGE NEWS - The Garden Route Dam continues to experience a decline in water levels, dropping to 44.5% this week despite 17mm of rainfall.
In response to ongoing supply pressure, George Municipality has escalated water demand management measures to Level 2D and implemented level 3 emergency water tariffs with immediate effect.
Under level 2D, all households are limited to 10 kilolitres of water per month, with consumption above this threshold subject to emergency tariff rates.
Businesses, entertainment facilities and other users dependent on municipal water are required to reduce consumption by 25% compared to their average use over the past six months, while industries must achieve a 15% reduction.
Specific restrictions include:
• Garden watering only with watering cans or buckets.
• Irrigation of sports fields using municipal water is prohibited.
• Vehicle washing with hoses is prohibited; buckets may be used unless alternative water sources are supplied.
• Filling swimming pools with municipal water is not allowed.
• Cleaning of outside surfaces using municipal water is prohibited.
Where alternative water sources such as boreholes or tanks are used, users must display “Own Water” signage.
High water users will be actively monitored, and flow-reducing devices may be installed where limits are exceeded. Non-compliance may result in fines or imprisonment.
The level 3 emergency tariffs that are now in effect are designed to discourage excessive water use and preserve limited potable water resources for essential needs.
Households or businesses with verified medical or operational requirements may apply for exemptions through the Deputy Director: Water Services, supported by appropriate documentation.
