GEORGE NEWS - In a tragic turn of events, 21-year-old Nelson Mandela University (NMU) student Fandiswa Mthonti, who was accused of murdering fellow student Lilitha Booi (23) on Sunday 17 November, took her own life at her home in KwaZulu-Natal at the end of last year.
Mthonti had been out on bail with strict conditions after being granted release on R1 000 in the George Magistrate's Court on Wednesday 4 December.
As part of her bail conditions, she was placed in the care of her mother and uncle, who live in KZN.
It is believed that Mthonti had ingested poison. The emergency responders were unable to save her.
The case against her was subsequently removed from the court roll in February when she was supposed to make her next court appearance.
Mthonti's death follows a murder case that shocked the local NMU student community when Booi was found with six stab wounds at her student residence in Mountainview Crescent, Le Vallia, on 17 November.
The police arrived at about 19:00 and Mthonti was arrested on the scene.
