GEORGE NEWS - The 21-year-old Nelson Mandela University (NMU) student Fandiswa Mthonti briefly appeared in the George Magistrate's Court on Friday 22 November.
Mthonti, represented by Jerome Bans from Bulelani Bans Attorneys Inc, is charged with the murder of a fellow student, Lilitha Booi (23), in Le Vallia on Sunday 17 November.
The case was postponed to Monday 2 December for her bail application as the state wanted to verify a few aspects regarding her bail application and the investigation officer was not available to attend court proceedings.
The incident occurred at their student residence in Mountainview Crescent.
When police arrived at the scene around 19:00, they discovered the victim with multiple stab wounds.
According to available information, the victim was stabbed six times with a knife. Mthonti was apprehended at the scene.
The motive for the incident is still under investigation.
In a recent statement, NMU communications manager Milisa Piko said counselling and psychosocial support for the affected students have been arranged with Emthonjeni Counselling Services. Students are encouraged to use these services to come through this difficult period.
Booi was a third-year tourism student at NMU. She will be laid to rest tomorrow, Friday 29 November.
George Herald reached out to the family for comment, but they declined.
