GARDEN ROUTE NEWS - The murder suspect Bevan van Druten (53), who was arrested for the murder of former Plettenberg Bay detective Nicky van Heerden (54), appeared in the Plettenberg Bay Magistrate's Court earlier today, Wednesday 21 January.
Van Druten, a well-known driftwood artist from Wilderness and Sedgefield, made a brief appearance in court earlier today on a charge of murder.
The case was postponed until Monday 26 January for legal representation and a bail profile.
The State intends to oppose bail. Van Druten has been referred to a district surgeon for observation in the meantime.
It is believed that he and Van Heerden were involved in a romantic relationship.
Van Heerden’s body was discovered at Rivertides near Keurbooms Beach on Sunday night, 18 January, after police responded to a report of a woman screaming.
“Upon arrival at the scene, they found the victim next to a vehicle with injuries to her body,” said police spokesperson Sergeant Wesley Twigg.
The vehicle found at the scene is believed to belong to Van Druten.
