GEORGE NEWS - Nelson Mandela Boulevard (NMB) and surrounding areas in the industrial area remain a crime hotspot, with police increasing blue-light patrols as muggings continue to target pedestrians and motorists travelling along some of George's busiest routes.
The latest incident occurred recently when an employee of a scaffolding company in the industrial area was allegedly mugged while walking home to Thembalethu.
The robbery took place near the T-junction of Rand Street and PW Botha Boulevard, close to the Metro housing development.
The incident has once again raised concerns among businesses in the area, with employers saying workers feel unsafe travelling to and from work.
Heinrich Muller, chairperson of the Master Builders Association, said he recently discovered that many employees were carrying sharp objects for protection.
What concerned him most was that many workers believed reporting these crimes to the police would make little difference.
"These are people who earn an honest living, yet they don't feel safe walking the streets to get to work or back home. I have also spoken to other businesses in the industrial area, and they are aware of the same problem."
He called on both the police and law enforcement to increase their visibility, particularly along NMB and PW Botha Boulevard, before the problem escalates further.
According to the Conville Police Station commander, Colonel Anton Stander, the robberies are largely driven by the need for money to buy drugs.
In response to the ongoing problem, Stander said they have increased blue-light patrols during peak hours, but commuters are still urged to remain vigilant.
"Do not display your cellphone openly and avoid using it while walking. Keep valuables out of sight and remain aware of your surroundings," he said.
He also reminded motorists to keep their vehicle doors locked while driving, particularly when stopping at intersections or in slow-moving traffic.
According to Stander, cellphone thieves often operate in groups. While one suspect distracts a motorist, another may open an unlocked vehicle door from the opposite side and steal a cellphone, handbag or other valuables.
Pedestrians are encouraged to walk in groups where possible, remain alert and report suspicious activity to police immediately.
Anyone with information relating to robberies in the area is urged to contact Conville Police Station's Community Service Centre on 044 803 3302 / 3303.
