GEORGE NEWS - Did you know that the law can be easy to understand and comply with? There is no need for lofty wording and incomprehensible clauses before a contract or legal advice can be effective.
It is perhaps more important that you understand your contract and what it requires and entitles you to do.
Commercial lawyer Thinus Louw believes in design thinking, to tailor-make a contract in plain and simple language to fit the client's needs. "Law needs a new, fresh approach to solving needs and to keep track with modern developments," says Louw.
Louw's practice at St John's Place, no 8 St John's Street, focuses on services that help businesses through their entire life cycle and cover four areas in the field of law: commercial law; dispute resolution; governance, risk management and compliance (GRC); business rescue, restructuring and liquidation.
Commercial law services are those services that support businesses in plying their trade. Although the drafting and review of various contracts (such as buying and selling, supply of products and services) is a major part of commercial law, this area of the law also covers other activities in business such as the formation and structuring of businesses.
"My experience of technology, product development and product management enables me to also cover the use of technology and data as part of business development, innovation, operations and decision-making," says Louw.
Dispute resolution is the process (or series of steps) of resolving disputes between parties.
"Quite often dispute resolution means either settling or going to court to fight it out. However, there are many alternatives that can be explored," Louw says.
GRC is a set of processes and procedures to help organisations achieve business objectives, address uncertainty, and act with integrity.
"Compliance with the law can give a business its competitive edge. However, too often, the opportunity to do so is not taken. I believe I can change that for the better."
