BUSINESS NEWS - Garden Route Animal Hospital, successfully run by Dr Carly Bartie and the recently appointed Dr Dean McGee, is in the process of being rebranded to VetCross George.
Born in Lydenburg in the Mpumalanga highlands, surrounded by nature, McGee developed a love for animals and the wild from early on.
Qualifying at Onderstepoort in 1987, McGee worked in practice in two areas that offered a varied case load including companion animals, livestock, equines and wildlife.
Four years ago he decided to explore working in the UK and was offered a position with a large veterinary group called Medivet.
"I started in a city practice in Stoke on Trent and moved into management after a year, but soon realised that I missed the bustle of a practice and the reward of treating animals. I relocated to a branch in Wales where I enjoyed building the practice and took advantage of the cycling routes the country lanes and rural setting offers," he says.
During this time his daughter, Vicky, qualified as a veterinarian and the opportunity to move to George and practise with her was one he could not refuse. She will be joining the VetCross George team at the end of February.
"Our country vet team must be adept to treat a variety of patients and in varying working conditions, from surgery on a budgerigar to stitching a wound on a horse, all in a day - as happened to me recently! Specialist orthopaedic procedures, deworming chickens or popping a pill down a fractious cat's gullet are all in a day's work.
"James Herriot said that as a vet, your life will be filled with infinite variety with never a dull moment, and he was right! I have already met many wonderful clients and patients in George. As a team, we look forward to adding to this number in the future, becoming part of this community and enjoying this beautiful part of the country," says McGee.
Garden Route Animal Hospital, soon to be VetCross George, can be found on the corner of Fifth and Mann streets, Loerie Park.
