GEORGE BUSINESS NEWS - Starting a company in the economic conditions of 2008 was never going to be easy, but local businessman and owner of DMC Developments, Sheldon Bubanj, decided to do just that.
A slow start was inevitable, but things steadily improved and the rest is, as they say, history.
With the influx of people to the Garden Route and the increasing demand for estate living, DMC Developments has positioned itself in the luxury home building niche with great success, working in Fancourt, Oubaai, Breakwater Bay, Kingswood, Pinnacle Point, Soeteweide and, of course, the gem of the Garden Route, Wilderness.
"Working in the residential construction space definitely has its challenges, but the sense of accomplishment and satisfaction after handing over a stunning new home to a happy client makes it all worthwhile," says Bubanj.
Having completed 58 projects over the last decade has certainly had its challenges, but also its highlights. In 2016 DMC Developments, along with Stevie Joubert (Stiles) and Eddie da Silva Architects, was declared winner of a prestigious award in Italy for the Hesquin Villa in Wilderness. This house was also featured on the popular lifestyle TV show Top Billing.
For years DMC Developments has been a proud member of the Master Builders Association (MBA) and Bubanj has over time become involved in the East Cape Master Builders Association (ECMBA), where he served as chairman of the Southern Cape region. He was also recently elected as president of the ECMBA.
Asked what the secret is for a successful project, Bubanj says that many clients have little or no experience in the building process and find it overwhelming to appoint a stranger to build their dream home.
"I totally understand this. Its a huge investment, both financially and emotionally. My advice will be to choose a local professional team and not to rush the planning process. Building can be a stressful process for all concerned, so proper planning is essential."
His advice to fellow builders: "Avoid conflict at all cost! The formula is quite easy. There are three areas that create conflict: quality, cost and time. There should be no compromise on quality. Deliver the project within budget and on time. If circumstances change and there are cost or time overruns, which often happens, make the client aware immediately so that the way forward is agreed upon to avoid surprises and conflict at the end," he says.
As a business owner Bubanj knows that it takes the people you work with to make the business a success.
"I would like to thank all the consultants whom I have built relationships with over the years. My suppliers and subcontractors who are always going the extra mile for us. And last but not least, my dynamic staff. They are literally in the trenches doing the hard work - day in and day out. Best team in the business! Thank you all."
