GEORGE NEWS - In honour of National Women’s Day and Women’s Month, George Municipality will host a full-day celebration on 9 August at SANParks Wilderness, bringing together 180 women invited from both corporate and community spaces under the theme “Accelerating Action”.
This annual highlight serves not only to commemorate the iconic 1956 Women’s March to the Union Buildings, but also to recognise the achievements and resilience of women across all sectors of society.
The programme on 9 August is designed to inspire, motivate and uplift women through interactive panel discussions, wellness activities, networking opportunities, and skill-building workshops.
Throughout the day the focus will be on mental health, self-care, and holistic well-being runs, with health screenings, nature walks, and canoeing activities forming part of the experience. Influential women in leadership, politics and business will share their stories, while stakeholders will provide information and opportunities to empower women through knowledge and support.
Beyond the main event, a series of community-driven engagements will be hosted throughout Women’s Month.
These include a support group session on 12 August, a wellness outreach on 18 August for women living on the streets, and a mentorship initiative for female inmates on 19 August.
The programme will close on 29 August in Thembalethu with an event that aims at fostering healing and dialogue among elderly women and survivors of gender-based violence.
Themed Breaking the Silence – Empowering Women”, this platform will offer a space for reflection, community building, advocacy, and a gesture of appreciation, as young women pamper elder participants to honour their life contributions.
