GEORGE ENTERTAINMENT NEWS - The George Music Society proudly presents the Songmaker's Trio on Friday 8 November at 19:30 in the Oakhurst Insurance George Arts Theatre.
This highly esteemed trio consists of the award-winning pianist prof Albie van Schalkwyk, soprano Antoinette Huyssen and cellist Hans Huyssen, all based in Cape Town. All three are song makers in their own right.
They share a love for everything cantabile (singable) and join forces to explore this very quality in unusual ways in their programme Gesungen with music by Robert and Clara Schumann, Brahms and Mendelsohn.
Prof Albie van Schalkwyk is a solo performer in his own right and also one of the leading chamber musicians and vocal accompanists in South Africa. In his distinguished career he has won the Unisa Overseas Scholarship and first prize in the SABC piano competition.
He teaches at UCT, has given master classes for singers and accompanists, and served as music producer and official accompanist for the SABC. He has also been a member of several well- known SA ensembles, including the Songmakers's Guild, which gives performers the opportunity to appear in lieder recitals.
Hans Huyssen
Hans Huyssen is a composer, Baroque cellist and conductor with a special love for early European Baroque music, rare traditions of indigenous South African music as well as some contemporary music.
Antoinette Huyssen obtained a Master's degree cum laude in classical voice from UCT where she also obtained a BMus in piano and guitar. As a soprano she is a frequent oratorio and recital soloist. She is a member of the early music ensemble Cape Consort, and has taught music at several Cape Town schools and the University of Stellenbosch.
Prof Albie van Schalkwyk
The Songmaker's Trio will perform music by the couple Robert and Clara Schumann. The Schumanns were a two-career couple - he a pioneering critic and one of the greatest composers of the Romantic era and she one of the leading concert pianists of Europe. The couple also had a close relationship with Johannes Brahms.
Tickets will cost R140 and R30 for learners. Members and over 75s pay only R90.
