This was the last contest in the three event series held during summer and organised by the Vic Bay Surf Club. The sponsors were well-known brands Giant Just Water, Surfing Toyz, QuikSilver and Hurricane Surf.
One of the organisers, Jacques Viviers, said junior surfing in the Southern Cape is gaining momentum thanks to the amazing support from the sponsors and parents alike. "Over the course of the series we had an average of over 50 entries and we are super excited about the future prospect of the event and the way it has grown. These kids spent a huge amount of time in the water and when most people would snuggle up in rainy and windy conditions, they put wet suits on and paddle out."
Viviers said the aim of the series was to lay the foundation for these kids to be competitive but also to enjoy this amazing sport. "With local icon Bianca Buitendagh, who is currently surfing on the World Championship Tour, we’ve got big shoes to fill. Next up we would really like to see the schools get involved and come out and support these events."
Billabong has started a South African inter schools event which is a great initiative.
Pro Junior Surfing is one of the best funded sports in South Africa today and with the support from brands like Billabong, RVCA and Hurley, the kids get the chance to compete at national level a few times a year.
Anyone who would like to take up the sport of surfing or would just like to try it out can contact Charles Voges on 072 769 2153.
The next series will start again in November 2014.

The Vic Bay Junior Surfing Series was well-supported by local surfers with an average of 50 youngsters taking part during the course of the three staged events.
