GEORGE SAILING NEWS - Sailing at George Lakes Yacht Club resumed on Sunday with the Frostbite series of races.
A good fleet of 17 sailing boats of various types braved the still cold water of Island Lake.
The day was pretty windless and at lunchtime the lake was like a mirror and racing had to be postponed. Eventually, after 14:00, a light south easterly breeze filled in and a race could be started. Nevertheless, the race continued, with the competitors trying to eke out as much speed as possible from the varying air movements. After this race a breeze did fill in for a while, but it was deemed to be not suitable for a second race.
It was Hans Delport who could use the boat speed of his Dart 18 to pull well ahead of the rest of the fleet before the wind faded. This gave him line honours at the finish, while the others were at a disadvantage in having to complete the course at a slower pace.
As a result, Hans Delport was also the winner on handicap in this race. Evelyn Osborne was the first dinghy to finish in second place on her Laser, followed by Malcolm Osborne.
Scoring on class ratings gave the next positions to Jordyn Soldin (Dabchick), Robyn Hellstrom (Laser Radial) and Ashley Layland (Laser 4.7)
