CHESS NEWS - Young chess players from the George area competed in the prestigious South African Open Chess Championship, held at DF Akademie in Bellville, Cape Town, from 2 to 5 July.
This four-day national tournament brought together some of the country's most promising chess talent across various age groups, creating an exciting platform for strategic thinking, determination and sportsmanship.
The time control for the event was 90 minutes per player, with a 30-second increment per move.
The George players performed exceptionally well.
Outstanding results
• U9 girls: Rebecca de Swardt was crowned the SA Open Champion in her age group.
• U7 girls: Olivia Lamb came in third, Diane Stander fourth and Coline Stander fifth.
• U7 boys: Adriaan Louw was fifth.
• U13 girls: Mari Greeff was fourth.
• U17 girls: Nina van Niekerk was fifth.
A highlight of the tournament was Rebecca's outstanding performance, having secured the title of SA Open Champion in the U9 girls' section. Her achievement is a proud moment for George and an inspiration to other young players who dream of competing at national level.
Mari Greeff came in fourth among the U13 girls.
Several other players also finished among the top 20 in their age groups.
George's schools congratulated every player who took part in this national event. While top positions are always celebrated, every participant gained valuable experience and represented the area with pride.
Chess teaches patience, concentration, resilience and strategic thinking, and these young players are shining examples of that.
