SPORT NEWS - The Eden U16 boys’ hockey team made a strong impression on the national stage in July, returning from the Sashoc Nationals Interprovincial Tournament (IPT) at Hilton College in KZN with a well-deserved silver medal.
Under the guidance of coaches Wanda Mtshilibe and Malcolm Quirk, and led by captain Déhan Meyer of Hoërskool Outeniqua, the young Eden side produced a determined and disciplined performance against some of the country’s best U16 hockey players.
Their success is a significant achievement for Southern Cape hockey and highlights the depth of talent emerging from the region.
York High School provided the backbone of the Eden squad, as 11 of its players earned provincial selection.
The York contingent consisted of Teo Janse van Vuuren, Phelo Mgudlwa, Reagan Syfers, Daniel Christie, Konrad Punt, Iviwe Pikini, Tayton Harding, Athandile Lengisi, Vladimir Strauss, Sange Mayekiso and Rome Quirk.
Having so many players from the same school in the provincial squad provided Eden with a valuable foundation. Their familiarity with one another’s playing styles, tactical understanding and established team chemistry helped the side quickly develop cohesion on the field.
Hoërskool Outeniqua was also well represented, as Déhan was joined by Nico Pretorius and HJ Joubert.
A valuable experience
While the silver medal was a fitting reward for the team’s efforts, the experience of competing at a national tournament is arguably just as valuable.
Facing the country’s leading young hockey players allowed the Eden squad to test themselves at a higher level and gain experience that will benefit their development in the years ahead.
For the players, the tournament also offered an opportunity to represent the Southern Cape with pride and demonstrate the quality of hockey being produced in the region.
With many of the players returning to York High to complete their local school hockey season, the experience gained at Hilton College is likely to have a lasting impact.
