SOCCER NEWS - George's U15 boys and girls were crowned the champions at the annual FNB Football First Development Festival after some thrilling finals at the Lawaaikamp Stadium on Saturday 11 July.
The boys secured the title with a dramatic 4-3 penalty shoot-out victory over Mossel Bay, after a goalless final.
George dominated the early possession, but found it difficult to break through a disciplined Mossel Bay defence. Both teams created chances in a tightly contested second half before the match went straight to penalties.
The George girls reached the final with a 2-0 win over Plettenberg Bay and celebrated championship success, beating Mossel Bay 3-1 on penalties after another scoreless final. They booked their place in the decider with a 3-1 victory over Plettenberg Bay.
Six local football associations participated in this year's festival: George, Knysna, Mossel Bay, Oudtshoorn, Plettenberg Bay and Hessequa.
FNB representative Monde Dlamini said the programme aims to develop young footballers in five rural regions - Mthatha, Pietermaritzburg, George, Thohoyandou and Kimberley - by providing opportunities that could positively transform their futures and those of their families.
