CRICKET NEWS - The Garden Route Badgers recorded a thrilling six-wicket victory in a dramatic encounter against the North West Dragons in the Yes Play Pro20 Cup in Potchefstroom on Saturday evening, 10 October.
The visitors, who hit 16 runs in the last over, are now serious contenders for a place in the top eight for the business end of the competition.
The Dragons, who won the toss and opted to bat first, posted a competitive 149/6 in their allotted 20 overs. Wian Lubbe (77 from 5 balls; 2x6, 6x4) and Dian Forrester (36 from 24 balls; 2x6, 2x4), who both represented the Proteas in limited-overs cricket, were the top run-scorers for the home team.
For the Badgers, the young Leo Sadler, with 4/18 in his four overs, was the stand-out bowler. Reagon Rhode (1/22 in 3 overs) and Liam Alder (0/16 in 2 overs) also provided valuable support.
The Badgers captain, Janneman Malan (67* from 48 balls; 1x6, 4x4), was the batting hero for the Badgers. Slade van Staden (34 from 38 balls; 1x4) and Leo Sadler (24 from 16 balls; 2x4) also made valuable contributions.
It was, however, Liam Alder’s cameo of 16 from seven balls (2x4) that enabled the Badgers to surpass the winning total (150/4) from the last ball of the match for a memorable victory.
The Badgers are currently second (13 points) on the log behind the Dolphins (15 points).
The Warriors are third on 12 points, followed by the Lions in fourth at 11 points - all after four matches.
With the top four teams that will qualify for the Super 8 stage, Friday’s televised match against the Warriors at the REC in Oudtshoorn - starting at 13:00 - will be mouthwatering.
