GEORGE NEWS - Supporters of Ziyanda Malgas (32) are calling for justice and opposing bail for the man accused of her murder ahead of his next appearance in the George Magistrate’s Court on 14 October.
A ‘Justice for Ziyanda’ poster calls on supporters to gather at the court at 09:00, wearing a pink doek or pink T-shirt.
“We stand together, in peace and with one voice, calling for truth, accountability and justice,” the poster reads.
It describes Malgas as a beautiful soul, a loving daughter, a friend, a sister and calls for no bail for the accused.
Bail application scheduled
Malgas’ partner, Valdimiro Alfredo Tsambe (28), has been charged with her murder. He made his second appearance in the George Magistrate’s Court on 5 October, when the matter was postponed to 14 October for his bail application.
Post-mortem reveals assault and strangulation
Malgas was found dead next to a road in the Zone 8 informal settlement in Thembalethu early on 24 September.
Her cellphone was still with her and she had no visible injuries. A post-mortem subsequently found that she had been assaulted and strangled.
Her death has again put the spotlight on gender-based violence in George.
Information received by George Herald raises questions about her final hours.
Tsambe allegedly told police that Malgas left their flat at about 19:00 on 23 September and did not return.
However, according to information supplied to George Herald, she made a WhatsApp video call to her best friend at about 21:30 while still at home.
Two people reportedly saw Malgas and Tsambe together in a vehicle at about 20:00. A neighbour who returned home later that night said he heard the couple arguing inside their flat.
These accounts have not been independently verified by George Herald and do not establish what happened to Malgas.
Police visited the couple’s flat shortly after her body was discovered.
