GEORGE NEWS - A vehicle was destroyed by fire near the steps leading to Flat Rock in 6th Avenue, Wilderness, at approximately 10:00 on Thursday morning, 8 October.
According to witnesses, the owner had parked his vehicle and was overlooking the beach when he noticed what he initially thought was mist coming from the direction of his car.
He soon realised the vehicle was on fire and rushed back to retrieve some of his valuables, including his paraglider, while calling for help.
A nearby resident alerted the fire department, which subsequently extinguished the blaze. SANParks personnel were also at the scene.
Tracey Pretorious from Wilderness Dunes said she and her maintenance manager arrived at the scene with fire extinguishers after seeing WhatsApp posts about the incident.
"After talking to the owner of the vehicle and realising that he needed first aid on his hand and arm, I called my front office manager at Wilderness Dunes to bring water and a first aid kit with Burnshield," said Pretorious.
She said she made the call after asking both the fire department and SANParks personnel whether they had a first aid kit.
