GEORGE NEWS - The new George mayco (mayoral committee*) was announced in council last Friday, 26 November. In the true nature of a coalition, a member of the Freedom Front Plus, Chris Neethling, was included to serve on the mayco with nine DA councillors for the next five-year term.
The mayco, chaired by Mayor Leon van Wyk, are as follows:
• Browen Johnson
(Civil Engineering Services: Operational);
• Jackie von Brandis
(Civil Engineering Services: Capital Projects and Budget Facility for Infrastructure);
• Nosicelo Mbete
(Electrotechnical and Fleet Management);
• Jean Safers
(Community Services: Refuse, Environment);
• Charlotte Clarke
(Community Services: Community Safety);
• Henry Hill
(Planning, Building Control, Property);
• Bazil Petrus
(Human Settlements);
• Dirk Wessels
(Finance and Strategic Services);
• Chris Neethling of the FF Plus
(Corporate Services, including Human Resources);
• Brendon Adams
(Social Development, Libraries, Sport).

ACDP councillor Johan du Toit will chair the MPAC (Municipal Public Accounts Committee).
In addition, ACDP councillor Johan du Toit will chair the MPAC (Municipal Public Accounts Committee) and Gert Niehaus of the FF Plus will chair the Section 79 Committee for the GIPTN (George Integrated Public Transport Network).

The members of the mayco are appointed by the executive mayor from among the members of the council. The mayco's primary task is to assist the executive mayor in the exercising of his/her powers; it is in essence an extension of the Office of the Executive Mayor.
