GEORGE NEWS - As winter temperatures continue across the Garden Route, many households are relying on electric heaters, fireplaces, wood-burning stoves and gas heaters to keep warm.
While these appliances provide comfort during the colder months, they can also increase the risk of house fires if not used safely.
Residents are encouraged to take simple precautions to help protect their homes and families this winter.
Keep heaters at least one metre away from curtains, bedding, furniture and other flammable materials, and never leave them unattended. Electric heaters should be plugged directly into a wall socket where possible, as overloading plug points or extension cords can create a fire hazard.
If you use a fireplace, fit a fire screen to prevent sparks from escaping and never leave a fire burning unattended. Chimneys should also be inspected and cleaned regularly to reduce the risk of chimney fires.
Gas heaters require regular maintenance. Check cylinders, hoses and connections for leaks or damage, and ensure rooms are well ventilated when gas appliances are in use. If you smell gas, switch off the appliance immediately, ventilate the area and avoid lighting flames or operating electrical switches.
Families should also keep children and pets away from heaters, fireplaces and candles, have a fire extinguisher or fire blanket readily available, and ensure everyone in the household knows the quickest way to get out safely if a fire breaks out.
In an emergency, every second counts. George Municipality has compiled its emergency, municipal and essential service contact numbers into one convenient guide, making it easier for residents and visitors to get the right help quickly. Keep these numbers somewhere visible in your home or save them on your cellphone so they are readily available should an emergency occur.
