GEORGE NEWS - A vehicle belonging to a security company was set alight in Thembalethu in the early hours of Tuesday morning. It happened during what appeared to be a protest that broke out in 13th Street near All Bricks in Zone 8.
According to eyewitnesses, a group of men started burning tyres in the street. They allegedly stopped a security vehicle that was driving past and forced the male driver to get out of the car. He managed to escape, after which the men set the vehicle alight.
At this stage it is still unclear what the protest, that took place between 03:00 and 04:00, was about.
In another incident around the same time, a group of men tried to stop a truck that was travelling in the direction of Wilderness on the N2 highway. Apparently, they threw a petrol bomb at the truck, but the driver drove off unharmed. It happened on the highway between Thembalethu and the Garden Route Mall.
The police confirmed the incidents and said at this stage it is unclear who was responsible for the incidents. "The investigations are ongoing and we are looking at all possibilities as to who were involved," said the police.
