GEORGE NEWS - According to the driver of the 5-ton truck which burnt out on the N2 at the Gwaiing River Bridge earlier this afternoon, "something in the front of the truck broke and the truck veered off to the left."

The driver, who would only identify himself as Madoda, said the truck then hit the concrete barrier of the bridge, and came to a halt about 80 metres further, catching fire in the process.

He was not injured.

The truck did not overturn as initially reported.

Although the accident happened after the off-ramp to George, Madoda insisted that he was on his way from Port Elizabeth to George.

Both lanes of the N2 in the direction of Mossel Bay have been closed.

Emergency personnel are still on the scene completing the clean-up operation.
