GEORGE NEWS - The inaugural George Festival officially got under way on Friday evening, 12 December, with an intimate cocktail reception at the New Kingswood Club House, marking the culmination of months of planning and the realisation of a long-held vision.
The guests were in high spirits as the city prepared to celebrate and showcase its local talent through a diverse programme of arts, cultural and sporting activities.
The organisers highlighted the extensive preparation and countless hours invested to bring the festival to life.
In his address, Mayor Browen Johnson described the festival as a reflection of the city’s identity and future. “This festival is a celebration of George, our culture, our sport, our arts and our creativity, and most importantly our people. It provides a platform to showcase our talent, our natural beauty and our growing economy, and reflects the momentum of a city on the rise,” he said.
The Provincial Minister of Cultural Affairs and Sport, Ricardo Mackenzie, reflected on the gap left in George following the departure of the HSBC World Sevens Tournament several years ago. He said the George Festival presented an opportunity for stakeholders to collaborate on a first-of-its-kind event that would highlight the city’s vibrancy on a global stage. “George has always been a city of talent, vibrant culture and natural beauty. The George Festival 2025 will showcase this uniqueness, bringing communities together in ways never seen before.
From sport to music and traditional arts, this festival firmly positions George as a must-visit destination for culture and celebration. Investing in festivals like these delivers not only unique experiences, but also significant economic and social benefits,” Mackenzie said.
Several dignitaries and partners who played a role in the festival’s development attended the launch, including Municipal Manager Godfrey Louw, MMC for Sport Development Melvin Roelfse, and Dr Harry Malila, Director General of the Western Cape Government. Business partners represented included MTN, Heineken, SportPesa and Knox Hydrate.
