GEORGE NEWS - Four children recently benefitted from life-changing surgery at the George Hospital thanks to the Dr Ansua Foundation's commitment to bridging gaps within healthcare services.
The foundation provides surgical care, comprehensive support and rehabilitation to underserved patients.
The latest reports from the foundation tell the heartwarming stories of Miguel Mianna, Ava Paige Britz, Shafiqa Sass and Mila Benjamin.
Miguel was born with an extra thumb due to polydactyly, but correction surgery under the skilled hands of Dr Marshall Murdoch has improved the functionality of his thumb and also restored his confidence.
Ava's journey with the Dr Ansua Foundation began after a severe burn injury left her family desperate for help.
Dr Ansua Steyn's compassionate approach, combined with advanced treatments from Biomedical Emporium, played a crucial role in Ava's remarkable recovery. Just a week after her initial treatment, she showed significant signs of healing.
Shafiqa, a Grade 9 learner, had long struggled with moles on her face that affected her confidence. The moles were successfully removed by Steyn, a simple procedure that has hugely boosted Shafiqa's self image.
Mila’s journey from despair to hope highlights the foundation’s commitment to improving the lives of children with severe disabilities.
Mila was born with West syndrome, a severe form of epilepsy, which led to the loss of her leg. The foundation, in partnership with Werner Marx Orthopaedic Services, provided Mila with a prosthetic leg that restored her mobility and independence.
These stories reflect the foundation's mission to bring hope, healing and happiness to those in need.
A collaboration agreement between George Hospital and the foundation, headed by Steyn herself, was reached earlier this year. Private medical teams offer their services to the foundation at one of the hospital's theatres.
In exchange for the theatre space, the medical team also performs procedures on some of the patients of George Hospital to relieve pressure. With a shortage of staff due to the budget cuts, the hospital can only use three of its five theatres.
