GEORGE NEWS - An independent socio-economic study under the joint auspices of the Western Cape Government Department of Transport and Public Works and the Municipality of George will be undertaken in George from 22 October until 14 December.
The aim of the study is to measure the socio-economic and funding impact of the implementation of the public transport system, and to compare it with previous studies to determine the actual impact of the system in George.
In 2008, an economic efficiency assessment and macro-economic analysis as well as a socio-economic survey for the introduction of scheduled public transport services in George were undertaken.
The economic assessment intended to consider two specific dimensions related to the introduction of regulated public transport services in the George area.
These dimensions included an assessment of the economic efficiency of the proposed system as opposed to maintaining the status quo, and an assessment of the macro-economic impact of the introduction of the regulated public transport service.
The socio-economic survey focused on an assessment of the contribution to improved quality of life of residents, user benefits and dis-benefits, access to opportunities and general perceptions and attitudes towards transport. These two reports served as baseline reports.
Ten years since the baseline study, there is a need to now measure it again, and to compare it with the previous studies to determine actual impact and derived indicators for future evaluation.
Surveyors with appropriate identification cards will undertake the survey. More information can be obtained from the surveying company at (044) 805-5453.
