GEORGE NEWS Georgians are invited to join the Cansa Relay for Life at the Pacaltsdorp sports grounds on Saturday and Sunday, 3 and 4 October.

This overnight event, now in its second year, will bring together families, cancer survivors, caregivers, community organisations, businesses and supporters to remember those who have died from cancer, celebrate the survivors and support those still fighting the disease.

The relay starts at 18:00 on Saturday and ends at 06:00 the next morning. It will be family-friendly, and parking, security and medical assistance will be available. Registered nurses have volunteered to provide medical support. Alcohol and drugs will not be allowed.

An area will be set aside for open fires, and attendees are asked to use only the designated area and follow safety measures.

Team registration costs R750. Day visitors pay R30 for adults and R10 for children under 12.

The Luminaria Ceremony will honour people who have lost their lives to cancer, as well as survivors and those currently fighting the disease. Luminaria bags cost R10 and are available at the Cansa offices in Merriman Street.

Local musicians, singers, bands, dancers and other performers are invited to participate.

The organisers are also calling on businesses and residents to support the relay through sponsorships, products, services, entertainment or other contributions.
