The Eden Lions Club in George recently assumed the Lions Operation Brightsight project which provides corrective spectacles to the underprivileged. Through this project, Outeniqua Optometrists, under the helm of Martin Botha, discovered that young Steven's cornea was severely damaged and realised that without an urgent cornea transplant he was doomed to a life of darkness. Unfortunately, corneas need to be imported. As a result, a single cornea transplant can cost up to R45 000.
Once the Eden Lions Club heard of Steven's desperate need, they banded together and started raising funds for his much-needed operation. "So often the sighted take their vision for granted. Steven's cornea was so damaged that he needed the transplant within six months to prevent permanent damage," explained Ceri Shackleton, first vice-president, Eden Lions Club.
The first of many fundraising events to enable Steven's operation was the Fundraising Golf Day played at Kingswood Golf Estate on 28 March. "Kingswood kindly let us hold the golf day there and they supplied a light meal and the golf carts," said a thankful Shackleton.
Not only did the golfers contribute through their green fees, but they dug deep during the evening's lively auction as well, raising close to R16 000. "We had fantastic prizes sponsored by many companies and individuals. Without the golfers and the sponsors we would not have had a successful day."
Although the day had a serious purpose, the golfers thoroughly enjoyed the event and complimented the Eden Lions Club for a well-organised day, making special mention of the welcome they received when they were presented with goodie bags packed full of surprises.
The Eden Lions Club have previously enabled two recipients in receiving successful cornea transplants.
