GEORGE NEWS – After about six months at home, living as much of a normal life as he could, little Juván Havenga from Wilderness has been admitted to hospital once again, just a day before his second birthday.
The young fighter is currently in Medi Clinic George, where he is being treated for a lung infection and a swollen abdomen.
While this is not how his parents, Adelizé and Ettienne, had imagined celebrating his birthday, they remain deeply grateful.
“The fact that he is alive is already the greatest gift,” the family shared.
Juván was discharged last year after spending nearly a year in the hospital, finally returning home to be with his family in Wilderness. This was a major milestone after an incredibly difficult period during which he relied on machines, intravenous feeding and specialised medical care.
However, his road to recovery remains complex and fragile.
Over the past few weeks, Juván began experiencing brain spasms, prompting further medical investigations. Doctors have conducted multiple ECGs in an effort to better understand the spasms and determine the most effective treatment going forward.
Despite these ongoing challenges, this little boy continues to inspire those around him with his strength and determination.
His mother, Adelizé, recently shared the following message:
“Today is another big step in Juván’s journey…
More tests, more investigations, but also more hope.
Every day he shows us how strong he is.
Although his little body is small, his fighting spirit is big.
Thank you to every doctor and nurse who takes such good care of him.
And thank you to everyone who prays, supports and believes with us for healing.”
Juván, who was diagnosed with the rare and life-threatening condition autoimmune enteropathy, has already endured more than most do in a lifetime.
While this latest hospitalisation is a setback, the Havenga family remains steadfast in their faith and hope. Their focus is on every small victory and every day that Juván shows just how strong he truly is.
For them, this birthday is not about celebration, but about gratitude.
