GEORGE NEWS - George Libraries proudly joined the world celebration of World Read-Aloud Day, an annual event that highlights the joy and significance of reading aloud. This special day encourages communities to organise reading activities, share stories with loved ones, and promote literacy.
This year, George Libraries collaborated with Nal’ibali to present a reading of What is That? by Baeletsi Tsatsi. This engaging story not only fosters awareness of indigenous languages but also promotes respectful communication skills.
Through storytelling, children experience new words, expressions, and cultural enrichment.
Thembalethu Library staff visited Grade 3 learners from M.M. Mateza, Tyholorha, and Thembalethu Primary Schools, reaching an impressive 564 learners.
Children’s Librarian Garelene Muller hosted an engaging reading session at George Library for teachers and young learners from Heeltyd Speeltyd, while Library Assistant Sylvia Kibido conducted additional sessions inside George Library.
Blanco Library staff visited Kretzenshoop Primary School, where 115 children participated, and Kingdom Kids Crèche, where 58 young learners enjoyed the event.
At Conville Library, Library Assistant Hazel Springfield and EPWP worker Grizene Kiewiets read to 40 children at Parkdene Crèche, with additional reading sessions conducted by Conville Library staff throughout the day.
Pacaltsdorp Library also played a key role in the celebrations, visiting Pacaltsdorp Primary School, where 199 learners were captivated by readings of Perfekte Ek by Martie Preller - teaching self-acceptance - and I Can by Susan Winter, which encourages perseverance.
The interactive session, led by Library Assistant Mandy Naidoo and Senior Library Assistant Elton Snyders, was a resounding success.
Uniondale Library staff visited Chris Nissen Crèche, reading to 35 children, and then engaged learners at Kleine Handjies Crèche, where teacher Natasha Bekker led a storytelling session.
Senior Librarian James de Waal reached 61 learners at Waboomskraal Primary School before visiting Sonneblomland Crèche, where 10 young learners enjoyed a delightful reading session.

The celebrations concluded with a significant moment as De Waal, the Mayor of George, Alderlady Jackie von Brandis, and Cllr Melvin Roelfse officially handed over books to Phambili Women’s Shelter in Rosemoor, reinforcing the city’s commitment to literacy and education.
George Libraries remain dedicated to fostering a love for reading and ensuring that every child has the opportunity to explore the magic of books. World Read-Aloud Day 2025 was a remarkable success, leaving a lasting impact on young minds across the region.
