GEORGE NEWS - All driver’s licences that expired between 26 March and 31 December 2020, during the various Covid-19 Lockdown phases, were extended to 31 August 2021. There are still many motorists who need to renew their driver’s licences.
The George Traffic Department urges these motorists to do so before their licences expire and they end up driving illegally without a valid driver’s licence. Renewing it timeously will also help avoid the need to stand in long queues.
The Traffic Department will conduct regular roadblocks to ensure drivers and their vehicles are licenced.

ELECTRONIC REMINDERS
The Road Traffic Management Corporation (RTMC) has confirmed that renewal notices for driver’s licences and professional driver’s permits (PrDPs) will no longer be printed and posted, but from 8 March this year an online system will activate SMS and e-mail reminders.
This means all driver’s licence holders whose correct contact details are on the NaTIS online system will in future receive an SMS or e-mail notification on the first of the month for a driver’s licence or professional driver’s permit that expires at the end of that month (so, if your driving licence or PrDP expires 31 May, you will receive a notification on 1 May).
There will not be a follow-up SMS and no SMS or e-mail will be sent if a driver’s licence or PrDP has already expired.
If there is a warrant of arrest against your name, you will not be able to renew your driver’s or vehicle licence until the outstanding fine and contempt of court have been paid. This will be indicated on the SMS or e-mail notification.
An e-mail notification is an electronic version of the driver’s licence renewal notice (the one that was previously printed and posted to you). It can be downloaded and printed if need be, and then presented to the cashier to renew your driver’s licence.
Please note, YOU DO NOT NEED THE NOTICE TO BE ABLE TO RENEW YOUR LICENCE, it is just a convenient reminder. Your driver’s licence expiry date is indicated on your current driver’s licence card and it is recommended that you diarise the licence expiry date in advance to ensure timely renewal.
Driver’s licences are valid for five years from the date of renewal. Regulation 108 (6) (a) states the licence card needs to be renewed before the expiry date. The expired licence card will be valid, with the proof of payment of the renewal, for a further three months during which time the new licence card will be made available.
Contact the driver’s licence centre on 044 878 2400, or visit the premises at Mission Street, Pacaltsdorp, open weekdays 08:00 to 15:00 (all people in the building by 15:00 will be assisted).
