GEORGE NEWS - The inaugural Firefighter Challenge at The Market @ Transnet Transport Museum crowned John-Marc Olivier from George and Michaella Coomber, who was visiting in Oudtshoorn from Pretoria, as its first male and female champions.

The event was launched by market organisers Pieter du Plessis and Heidre Basson in partnership with Garden Route Fire Chief Deon Stoffels, to provide a family-friendly attraction and an opportunity for the public to meet the firefighters who protect our local community.

The event reached another level when Emile Conrad, a seven-time South Africa's Toughest Fire Fighter champion, came on board. Conrad, a firefighter with a genuine passion for his work, his family and his community, helped set the standard and inspire the challenge that followed.

Throughout the event, members of the public and representatives from local businesses stepped up to test themselves against the firefighters. Many came close, but the firefighters proved just how fit, skilled and determined they are. 

In the end, Olivier and Coomber recorded the fastest times to earn the titles of The Market Fire Fighter Challenge Male and Female Champions, along with the ultimate bragging rights.

Following the overwhelming success of the event, plans are already under way for an even bigger and tougher Fire Fighter Challenge at The Market, taking place from 11 December to 2 January. 

Visitors can also look forward to the introduction of an exciting Kids Fire Fighter Challenge, giving younger participants the opportunity to experience the fun while learning more about the important role firefighters play in our communities.

The Market's official beneficiary is SA for Hope NPC, a humanitarian organisation supporting farmers, farm workers and communities affected by droughts, veld fires, floods and other disasters.
