GEORGE NEWS - Final clarity regarding the operating of the Codeta Disadvantaged Taxi Association George (Codeta) in the city of George will probably only be reached at the end of May.
The Cape Town High Court granted the George Municipality an order that forbids Codeta to operate in George on 21 December. It was served on Codeta on Monday 10 January.
Codeta, that had until 25 January to file counter-arguments, filed an urgent court application to overturn the court order.
According to Arnold Pietersen, chairperson of the association, the matter was heard on Tuesday 25 January. The legal representative of the municipality asked for a postponement and the matter was postponed till the end of May - about four months from now - after which the court order will be final.
"For now our advocate has until 22 February to file our affidavits," said Pietersen. From these it will be clear what Codeta's arguments are.
In the meantime Codeta is also filing an application to the Western Cape Department of Transport to allow it to receive temporary operating licences for the period until the court case is heard.

Pietersen said it is important because currently its 60 taxis can't operate in George.
He said that he is aware that there are passengers that are stranded. "They are frustrated and don't want to use the Go George bus service or other taxis."
At this stage they have stopped their operations and they are following the court order. They have also vacated their premises at the George taxi rank, as it is municipal property.
He stressed that there are no taxis operating under the banner of Codeta. If there are any operating, it is not with the consent of Codeta.
